Dependent children

A temporary pension could be payable to your dependent children at the time of your death, and as long as one of them meets the entitlement criteria. This pension will be equal to the lifetime pension that would have been payable, if it were not for your death, less the pension paid to your spouse or your beneficiary following your death, subject to a maximum of 40% of the lifetime pension payable before your death.
A child is entitled to a pension if he/she satisfies one of the following conditions:
  • • Under 18 years of age throughout the calendar year that includes the date of your death, or
  • • Under 26 years of age if the child is in full-time attendance at a school or university since January 1st, or September 1st, whichever is earlier, prior to the date of your death, or
  • • A person dependent upon you by reason of functional or physical disability that started when this person was meeting one of the two previous conditions. On the date of your death, this person must not be receiving any benefits from a last resort assistance program set up by provincial legislation.
