At Desjardins Life Assurance Company, we know how important the security and confidentialityof your personal information is to you.

We have thus developed guidelines and procedures regarding information confidentiality in order to protect personal information. 

Management and Protection of Personal Information Policy 
 
Respect for privacy and confidentiality is a major concern for all Canadians. That is why various legislative measures addressing the protection of personal information, both at the federal and provincial levels, have been adopted over the past few years.

The purpose of the following text is to apprise you of the commitments of Desjardins and its subsidiaries (hereinafter jointly called Desjardins) with regard to the management and protection of personal information.

What is personal information?

Personal information is any material knowledge about an identifiable individual or any facts which, whether on their own or combined with other data, can identify an individual. However, this denotation does not include the name and title of an organization's employees, nor the addresses and telephone numbers of their workplace. Also, this term of reference does not apply to information regarding companies and other legal entities.

Collection of personal information and creation of a file

All the personal information that Desjardins has in its possession is kept in a file for the purpose of allowing you to benefit from our various insurance, annuity, credit and related financial services. With regard to our subsidiary, Desjardins Investment Inc., the purpose of creating this file is to offer you a variety of financial services, including mutual funds and investment contracts.

The data we ask of you or, with your permission, of third parties, is necessary for us to provide the services you require. Should these particulars not be made available, we would be unable to comply with your request. Desjardins collects only the information necessary to process your file, in compliance with the law.
Personal information must first be obtained directly from the person concerned. It is only with your authorization that we can collect information from third parties. When this is done, the source of the information is noted in your file.
The applications and forms we use contain an authorization section that allows us to collect, use and disclose (only under certain extenuating circumstances) your personal information. It is very important that you read this section carefully before you sign it.

We always ask for your consent before we collect or share any medical information that concerns you. This information remains the property of Desjardins and is never given to the other entities of the Desjardins Group.
Retention and use of personal information
Desjardins applies the necessary security measures to ensure the confidential nature of the personal information in its possession. This means that only those individuals who have the proper authority can access the personal information in our files and only for the purpose of performing their duties.

Desjardins has many security measures in place, including:

  • All permanent and temporary employees must sign a confidentiality agreement;
  • Rules concerning the protection of the confidentiality of personal information contained in company files were added to our Code of Business Conduct. Violation of these rules could lead to disciplinary action, and even dismissal;
  • Company representatives and providers of goods and services with access to personal information are required to sign a confidentiality agreement;
  • Security systems have been installed in our business establishments to prevent any unauthorized access to the buildings;
  • Elaborate safeguards have been installed in our computer systems. 
     

Desjardins ensures that the information in our files is up to date before it is used to make decisions regarding the individuals concerned.

Personal information contained in our files is never used for any purpose other than that for which it was intended.

Google Analytics

Desjardins uses Google Analytics on Desjardins websites (hereinafter "Sites") and Desjardins mobile applications (hereinafter "Applications"). The service is provided by Google Inc. (hereinafter "Google"). Desjardins uses first-party identifiers and third-party identifiers in conjunction with third-party vendors. Google Analytics uses cookies and other unique identifiers, which are anonymous identifiers placed on your computer material. They help Desjardins to analyze your use of the Sites and Applications. The traffic data collected through cookies and other unique identifiers particularly pertains to your use of the Sites and Applications (including your IP address). Google transmits the data and stocks it on servers in the United States. Google may share this data with third parties where legally obligated or when a third party is processing data for a Google account. No information allowing Google to identify you will be transmitted.

Google will use the information collected to:
 

  • analyze your use of the Sites and Applications
  • compile reports on Site and Application activity
  • provide other services related to Site and Application activity as well as Internet use
     

DoubleClick

DoubleClick is a cookie that Google Analytics uses to collect anonymous information. Google Analytics' Advertising Features on sites that use DoubleClick include:
 

  • Remarketing using Google Analytics
  • Google Display Network Impression Reporting
  • DoubleClick platform integrations and Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting
  • Floodlight Integration, a Doubleclick feature that enables marketing agencies hired by Desjardins to gauge Desjardins.com user activity after seeing or clicking on their ads. Floodlight is used for reports and ad optimization.

User ID

Google Analytics uses the User ID feature on the Sites and Applications. The feature makes it possible to associate information regarding relationships between various computer tools and several sessions with unique identifiers. Each User ID represents an individual anonymous user in Google Analytics.

Deactivation

When browsing, you can deactivate Google Analytics and/or DoubleClick by selecting the appropriate browser or computer tool parameters, advertising parameters, mobile advertisement parameters or other, notably the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

By using the Sites or Applications, you expressly agree to allow Google to process personal data under the conditions and for the purposes outlined above.

Disclosure of personal information

Desjardins will disclose personal information contained in a file to a third party only with the written consent of the individual concerned, or if it is required to do so by law (for example, in the case of an inquiry, by the officers of the court).

The mailing of personal information outside the organization is done in such a way so as to ensure confidentiality, even if the recipient is the person concerned.

Details about how we gather, use, and transmit information

Desjardins gathers personal information, i.e., information relating specifically to you, including your name, address, or e-mail, only when you supply it to us of your own free will.

Desjardins undertakes to protect your personal information using the appropriate security measures. If you would like to know more about the measures we have taken, please consult the section Security.

The Desjardins site uses cookies. While cookies enable the site to identify you as a specific user, they do not recognize you by your name or other personal information. You can program your browser to refuse cookies. However, choosing this option can deny you access to certain services offered by Desjardins. Desjardins may gather information for statistical purposes, for instance, to determine the relative popularity of each site page, the average number of pages accessed per visitor, and the average time each visitor spends on the site. None of this information is linked to you as an individual visitor. We use it only for inhouse audit purposes and to help us improve our site.

Surveys and Contests : By completing a survey, you share with us your opinion, response, or any other information you care to provide. We may use this information in our survey results and post them on our Website.
